This product is the root of the perennial deciduous vine plant of the legume family, wild kudzu (Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi) or sweet kudzu (Pueraria thomsonii Benth.). It is distributed throughout the north and south of mainland China. The roots are excavated in spring and autumn, sliced, and dried in the sun. They can be used raw or roasted.

Therefore, it can be used to treat external contraction exterior pattern, where pathogenic heat is trapped, with severe fever, mild aversion to cold, headache, dry nose, slight thirst, and thin yellow tongue coating. It is often used in combination with Bupleurum, Skullcap Root, Dahurian Angelica, etc., such as Bupleurum and Pueraria Flesh-Releasing Decoction; if it is a pattern of common cold due to wind-cold, with symptoms such as aversion to cold without sweating, stiff neck and back pain, it is often combined with Ephedra, Cinnamon Twig, Peony Root, etc., such as Pueraria Decoction.
  2. Used for measles that do not erupt. This product has the functions of releasing the exterior and dispersing pathogens, releasing flesh and reducing fever, and promoting the eruption of measles. Therefore, it can be used to treat the initial stage of measles, where the exterior pathogen is trapped, and the rash does not erupt smoothly. It is often used in combination with Cimicifuga Rhizome, Peony Root, Liquorice Root, etc., such as Cimicifuga and Pueraria Decoction; it can also be combined with Mentha, Great Burdock Achene, Schizonepeta, Cicada Slough, etc.
  3. Used for Rebing thirst, yin deficiency consumptive thirst. This product is sweet and cool, and while clearing heat, it can also stimulate the rise of stomach qi, thus having the function of promoting fluid production to quench thirst. It is used to treat Rebing thirst due to fluid injury, often combined with Reed Rhizome, Snakegourd Root, Anemarrhena, etc.; if used to treat internal heat consumptive thirst, it is often combined with Smoked Plum, Snakegourd Root, Ophiopogon Tuber, Tangshen, Astragalus Root, etc., such as Jade Spring Pill.
  4. Used for heat diarrhea and dysentery, diarrhea due to spleen deficiency. This product can both clear and expel pathogenic heat, and also raise clear yang, stimulating the rise of spleen and stomach clear yang to stop diarrhea and dysentery. Therefore, it can be used to treat heat diarrhea and dysentery where the exterior pattern is not resolved and pathogenic heat enters the interior. It is often combined with Skullcap Root, Coptis Rhizome, Liquorice Root, etc., such as Pueraria, Skullcap and Coptis Decoction; if it is diarrhea due to spleen deficiency, it is often combined with Tangshen, Poria, Liquorice Root, etc., such as Seven-Ingredient White Atractylodes Powder.
