bubble_chart Etymology

"Qu" (曲), bend or curve; "quan" (泉), spring or fountain. The acupoint is located at the medial end of crease behind knee when knee is flexed, resembling a spring emerging from a curved area, hence the name.

On the medial side of knee, at the end of medial crease when knee is flexed, posterior to medial epicondyle of femur, in the depression anterior to the insertion of semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles.

  • Lingshu-Benshu: "Below auxiliary bone, above the large tendon, obtained when knee is flexed";
  • Waitai Miyao: "At the end of medial crease of knee".

  • Muscles: anterior to the insertion of semimembranosus and semitendinosus muscles, posterior edge of sartorius muscle, gracilis tendon, medial head of gastrocnemius muscle.
  • Nerve: superficially, saphenous nerve and obturator nerve; deeper, tibial nerve can be reached toward popliteal fossa.
  • Vessels: great saphenous vein, highest genicular artery; deeper, popliteal artery and vein can be reached toward popliteal fossa.

With knee flexed, insert perpendicularly toward popliteal fossa 1 to 1.5 cun. If a pulsating sensation is felt beneath the needle, stop inserting to avoid damaging the artery. Moxibustion with moxa cone 3 to 5 times, moxibustion with moxa stick for 5 to 10 minutes.

Clear liver heat, dispel dampness-heat.

  • Classical: lower abdominal pain, diarrhea, seminal emission, impotence, genital pain, prolapse of uterus, genital itching, dysuria, ischuria, hernia, hernia-like masses in women, dizziness and pain, loss of appetite, vulvofemoral pain , pain in knee and shin, fever without sweating, mania.
  • Modern: hypertension, nephritis, prostatitis, prolapse of uterus, vaginal inflammation, genital itching.
