"Cheng" (承), to receive or bear; "Ling" (靈), refers to spirit or divine essence, indicating head is the seat of spiritual energy. The acupoint is located just above the lateral edge of parietal bone (known as "Tianling" (天靈) bone) at the top of head.

On the head, 5 cun posterior to the anterior hairline, 2.25 cun lateral to the midline of the head, on the line connecting Toulinqi (GB15) and Fengchi (GB20).
- Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "1.5 cun posterior to Zhengying (GB17)";
- Zhenjiu Wendui: "Toulinqi is located directly above eye, 0.5 cun within hairline; Muchuang (GB16) and Zhengying (GB17) are each 1 cun apart, and Chengling (GB18) is 1.5 cun posterior to Zhengying (GB17)." This places it 4 cun posterior to anterior hairline;
- Zhenjiu Dacheng: "Locates the point 5 cun posterior to anterior hairline";
