bubble_chart Formula Principles
The edema treated by this formula is caused by dysfunction of the spleen in transportation, leading to internal retention of water-dampness that overflows into the skin. When water-dampness is excessive internally and ascends to the lungs, it is accompanied by wheezing and inability to lie flat. The treatment principle is to move qi and resolve dampness, unblock water, and disperse edema. In the formula, Poria and Alisma serve as the sovereign herbs to promote urination and drain dampness. The minister herb White Atractylodes Rhizome invigorates the spleen and dries dampness, assisting in the transformation of water-dampness. Areca Seed and Areca Peel move qi, dry dampness, unblock water, and disperse edema, supporting the sovereign herbs to guide water downward. When qi transformation occurs, water-dampness is also transformed. Therefore, Perilla Leaf, Dried Tangerine Peel, Villous Amomum Fruit, and Aucklandia Root are added to regulate qi and move stagnation, further assisting in the transformation of water-dampness. White Mulberry Root-Bark ventilates the lungs and promotes urination. Floweringqince Fruit expels dampness pathogens. Rush Pith gently promotes urination. Ophiopogon Tuber nourishes yin fluids, ensuring that the diuretic herbs do not damage yin. These herbs serve as assistants and guides. When combined, these herbs promote qi movement and dampness transformation, unblock the water passages, and thus resolve edema. Additionally, since Poria is the sovereign herb in this formula and can guide water downward to reduce swelling, the formula is named after it.
