bubble_chart Formula Principles

This formula is a remedy for governing the six stagnations and is a representative formula for regulating qi and relieving depression. The six stagnations as a disease are mainly caused by the dysfunction of spleen and stomach qi, leading to abnormal ascending and descending, resulting in the mutual stagnation of dampness, food, phlegm, fire, qi, and blood. Common symptoms include chest and abdominal stuffiness, belching, acid swallow, and indigestion. In the formula, Cyperus regulates qi and relieves depression, treating qi depression with chest and abdominal distension and fullness; Sichuan Lovage Rhizome invigorates blood and removes stagnation, treating blood stagnation with stabbing pain; Atractylodes Rhizome dries dampness and strengthens the spleen, treating damp stagnation with chest stuffiness and excessive phlegm; Gardenia clears heat and purges fire, treating fire stagnation with epigastric upset and acid swallow; Medicated Leaven promotes digestion to harmonize the middle, treating food stagnation with poor appetite. Phlegm stagnation is often caused by the stagnation of qi, fire, dampness, and food. When qi flows smoothly, dampness is removed, and fire is cleared, phlegm stagnation will also be resolved, hence no additional phlegm-resolving medicine is used. Although this formula governs the six stagnations, it actually focuses on the function of regulating and harmonizing the qi movement of the liver and spleen. When qi movement is smooth, qi flows and blood circulates, and the stagnation of phlegm, fire, dampness, and food will naturally resolve. However, this is only a general principle, and in clinical application, it is necessary to flexibly modify the formula according to the predominance of the six stagnations to improve efficacy.
