This product is the nearly mature fruit of the deciduous shrub or small tree plant Evodia Fruit (Euodia ruticarpa (A. Juss.) Benth.), Stone Tiger (E. ruticarpa (A. Juss.) Benth. var. officinalis (Dode) Huang), or Sparse-haired Evodia Fruit (E. ruticarpa (A. Juss.) Benth. var. bodinieri (Dode) Huang). It is mainly produced in Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, Zhejiang, Sichuan, and other regions. The fruits are harvested from August to November before they split open, then dried in the sun or at low temperatures. They can be used raw or processed.

  1. Used for various pain syndromes due to cold stagnation in the liver meridian. This herb is pungent and dispersing, bitter and draining, hot in nature and cold-dispelling. It not only disperses cold evil from the liver meridian but also relieves liver qi stagnation, making it an essential herb for treating pain due to liver cold qi stagnation. For cold abdominal colic and abdominal pain, it is often combined with Fennel, Chinaberry Fruit, Aucklandia Root, and other medicinal combinations, such as Qi-Guiding Decoction from "Yi Fang Jian Yi." For Jueyin headache, it is often used with Ginseng, Fresh Ginger Rhizome, etc., such as Evodia Decoction. For dysmenorrhea due to deficiency and cold in the Chong and Ren meridians with static blood obstruction, it can be used with Cinnamon Twig, Chinese Angelica, Sichuan Lovage Rhizome, etc., such as Meridian-Warming Decoction. For cold-dampness beriberi with swelling and pain, or upward rushing into the abdomen, it is often used with Floweringqince Fruit, cultivated purple perilla leaf, Areca Seed, etc., such as Cock Crow Powder.
  2. Used for stomach cold vomiting syndrome. This herb has the functions of warming the middle and dissipating cold, downbearing counterflow to stop vomiting. For middle energizer deficiency and cold with epigastric cold pain and vomiting with acid regurgitation, it is often used with Ginseng, Fresh Ginger Rhizome, etc., such as Evodia Decoction. For vomiting due to external cold invasion and stomach disharmony, it can be used with Pineilia, Fresh Ginger Rhizome, etc.
  3. Used for deficiency cold diarrhea syndrome. This herb can warm the spleen and benefit the kidneys, assist yang and stop diarrhea, making it a common herb for treating spleen-kidney yang deficiency with diarrhea before dawn. It is often used with Psoralea, Nutmeg, Schisandra Fruit, etc., such as Four Miracle Pill. Additionally, applying this herb as a powder mixed with vinegar to the sole of the foot (Yongquan acupoint) can treat aphtha, and it is also used in modern clinical practice to treat hypertension.

  • This product has analgesic effects.
  • It can raise body temperature, and in large doses, it can excite the central nervous system and cause visual disturbances and illusions.
  • When its decoction is administered to dogs via gastric lavage, it has a significant hypotensive effect. However, when combined with Liquorice Root, the hypotensive effect disappears. The hypotensive effect is mainly due to the dilation of peripheral blood vessels and is related to histamine release.
