"Di" (地) refers to below; "ji" (機) refers to mechanism or pivot, likely referring to knee joint and the medial condyle of tibia. The acupoint is located below this area, hence the name. It is also referred to as "地箕(dìjī)" in Yixue Rumen, indicating its position below Jimen (SP11) (箕門).

On the medial side of lower leg, 3 cun below Yinlingquan (SP9), on the line connecting Yinlingquan (SP9) and the tip of medial malleolus.
  • Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "Five cun below knee";
  • Zhenjiu Juying: "In the depression below the medial supporting bone of the knee".
  • Xunjing Kaoxue Bian: "One method: 5 cun below Yinlingquan (SP 9), outside the large tendon on the medial side of bone, opposite to Juxu (ST 37)." "Another method: 8 cun above medial malleolus, diverging obliquely forward by 1 cun."   • Nerve: medial cutaneous nerve of lower leg (saphenous nerve), and tibial nerve deep behind.
