"Shang" (商) refers to the metal (金) phase in the five tones, and the point belongs to Jing-river point among the five transport points of foot taiyin spleen meridian (SP). Since Jing-river points of yin meridian are associated with metal, it is named "Shang". The point is located anterior and inferior to medial malleolus, opposite to the position of Qiuxu (GB40), hence the name.

In the depression anterior and inferior to medial malleolus, at the midpoint of the line connecting the tuberosity of navicular bone and the tip of medial malleolus. It is medial to the tendon of tibialis anterior muscle.
- Lingshu‧Benshu: "In the depression below medial malleolus";
- Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "In the slight depression anterior and inferior to medial malleolus";
- Xunjing Kaoxue Bian added: "Slightly anterior by 3 fen";
