"Er" (耳), ear; "he" (和), harmony or regulation; "liao" (髎), bone hollow. When ear is harmonious, it can hear sounds. The hollow is located in front of ear and in the depression behind the bone, hence the name. It's originally named "Heliao (和髎)", its Chinese pinyin is the same as "Heliao (禾髎)". To avoid confusion, "Er" (耳) was added.
