title | Yizong Jinjian |
or | Golden Mirror of the Medical Ancestors |
This book consists of ninety volumes, Wu Qian and others compiled it from the fourth to the seventh year of the Qianlong era (1739?1742), as a large-scale medical encyclopedia organized and edited by the government. The compilation and selection of materials for this book are very meticulous, with great effort and strict methodology, totaling fifteen categories. Volumes one to twenty-five of this book are Revised Complete Works of Zhongjing, including Revised Cold-Damage Disease Theory and Commentary and Revised Jingui Yaolue Commentary; volumes twenty-six to thirty-three are Abridged and Supplemented Mingyi Fanglun; volume thirty-four is Four Examinations Essentials; volume thirty-five is Essentials of Yunqi; volumes thirty-six to thirty-eight are Essential Methods of Cold-Damage Disease; volumes thirty-nine to forty-three are Zabing Xinfa Yaojue; volumes forty-four to forty-nine are Gynecology Essentials; volume fifty-five is Essential Methods of Pediatrics, volumes fifty-six to fifty-nine are Essential Methods of Smallpox; volume sixty is Essential Methods of Vaccination; volumes sixty-one to seventy-six are Essential Methods of Waike Xinfa; volumes seventy-seven and seventy-eight are Yanke Xinfa Yaojue; volumes seventy-nine to eighty-six are Essential Methods of Acupuncture and Moxibustion; volumes eighty-seven to ninety are Essential Methods of Bonesetting. Due to Wu's admiration for Zhongjing's theories, the content on cold-damage disease and Jingui occupies a significant proportion and is placed at the beginning of the volumes.
The separate disciplines included in this book are somewhat similar to today's divisions, and it does not include categories like Zhuyou, possibly reflecting the authors' resistance to witchcraft and superstition. However, methods like vaccination are highly praised and detailed, showing acceptance of advanced medical techniques. The methods of bonesetting, from Neijing theory to specific techniques of palpation, lifting, massage, and manipulation, as well as detailed illustrations of human skeletal anatomy and tools like bamboo splints, are all meticulously explained. It combines theory with practice, emphasizes practicality, and incorporates various experiences, making it one of the best works on Orthopedics and Traumatology throughout history. Other categories are similarly distinctive. Therefore, this book is indeed one of the most precise, comprehensive, concise, and practical medical encyclopedias and collections ever published. After its publication, it was widely welcomed by readers, becoming an important text for clinical Chinese medicine and a standard medical textbook in the Qing Dynasty.
