"Tian" (天), high place; "jing" (井), a depression surrounded by elevated areas. The point is located on upper arm, in the depression of olecranon fossa of humerus above the tip of elbow, hence its name.

On extensor aspect of upper arm, in the depression 1 cun directly above the tip of elbow when elbow is flexed, at olecranon fossa of humerus.
- Lingshu‧Benshu: "In the depression above the large bone on outer side of elbow... obtained by flexing elbow";
- Taisu‧Benshu BOOK>Yang Shang-shan's note: "1 cun posterior to elbow";
- Tongren Shuxue Zhenjiu Tujing: "1 cun posterior to flexed elbow, obtained by pressing knee with crossed hands, in the gap between two bones and tendons".
