"Tong" (通), to connect or pass through; "li" (里) refers to Xuli (虛里, ST18) or heart. The acupoint belongs to hand shaoyin heart meridian (HT), which corresponds to the heart, hence the name.

On polar side of forearm,1 cun above wrist crease (Shenmen (HT7) ), in the depression on the radial side of flexor carpi ulnaris tendon, 0.5 cun below
Lingdao (HT4).
- Lingshu-Jingmai: "Located 1 cun above the palm crease";
- Xunjing Kaoxue Bian: "Directly below pisiform bone, 1 cun inward, between the large tendon and bone. Alternatively, 1 cun behind Shenmen (HT7)".
