1. Danxi said: Since the Suwen, hernias have all been considered as caused by cold. There are those who have cold but no hernia, so there must be a theory to explain this. Therefore, it is thought that this disease begins with dampness-heat in the meridians. After being suppressed for a long time, it is then affected by external cold, and the dampness-heat is suppressed, causing pain. To consider it solely as cold may not be comprehensive. The ancient formula uses equal parts of Aconite Mother Root and Gardenia to make a decoction, which is also very effective. Later, this formula was modified according to the symptoms, and it always worked. It is necessary to differentiate the amount of dampness-heat and treat accordingly. There are also cases where it is accompanied by deficiency, in which case Ginseng and Atractylodes should be the main ingredients, supplemented by疏导. The pulse is deep, tight, and sluggish.
2. Note:疏导 drugs include Peach Kernel, hawthorn fruit, Immature Orange Fruit, black Gardenia, Sichuan Chinaberry, Evodia, Corydalis, Clove, and Aucklandia Root. Gardenia and Aconite Lateral Root decocted with wine and taken with salt is called Gardenia-Aconite Decoction. Danxi said: Aconite Mother Root treats the externally contracted cold, and Gardenia treats the internally suppressed heat.
