It is usually harvested in summer when the stems and leaves are lush, and the flowers are either not yet open or just beginning to open. It is then cut into sections and dried in the sun. Fresh motherwort herb: The seedling stage is stemless, with basal leaves that are round and heart-shaped, with edges that are shallowly lobed 5-9 times, each lobe having 2-3 blunt teeth. In the pre-flowering stage, the stem is square-columnar, with many branches at the upper part, and four sides sunken into longitudinal grooves, 30-60cm long, 0.2-0.5cm in diameter; the surface is green; the texture is fresh and tender, and the cross-section has pith in the middle. The leaves are alternately opposite, with petioles; the leaf blades are green, fresh and tender, and produce juice when rubbed; the lower stem leaves are palmately 3-lobed, the upper leaves are pinnately deeply or shallowly lobed into 3 pieces, the lobes are entire or have a few serrations. The smell is slight, and the taste is slightly bitter.

Dry motherwort herb: The stem surface is gray-green or yellow-green; the body is light, the texture is tough, and the cross-section has pith in the middle. The leaf blades are gray-green, mostly wrinkled, broken, and easily fall off. The verticillaster inflorescences are axillary, the small flowers are pale purple, the calyx is tubular, and the corolla is bilabiate. The cut segments are about 2cm long.
