Licorice products clear heat and cool blood, and are used to treat warm febrile diseases with high fever and irritability. It can be taken alone by infusing it with sugar in hot water, or decocted together with Gypsum and Coptis Rhizome to enhance the effects of clearing heat and purging fire.

  • To treat heat toxin-induced skin eruptions and dysphoria with constipation, it can be combined with Rhinoceros Horn, Unprocessed Rehmannia Root, and other heat-clearing and blood-cooling medicinals.
  • For hematemesis due to reckless movement of blood heat accompanied by irritability, it can be combined with hemostatic medicinals such as India Madder Root to strengthen the hemostatic effect.
  • In addition, licorice products have the effect of clearing heat and removing toxins, and are often used with heat-clearing, fire-purging, and toxin-removing medicinals such as Lonicera and Gardenia to treat external diseases such as sores, ulcers, and erysipelas.

    Select thick Dyers Woad bamboo and cut it into sections to form bamboo tubes with one end closed. Scrape off the outer layer of green tangerine peel. Then, fill the bamboo tube with Liquorice Root powder and compact it until it is about 0.3 cm from the tube opening. Lay Bamboo Shavings on top, seal tightly with a wooden plug, and use melted rosin to seal the opening. Hang the tube in a manure pit and soak for 49 days (usually done in winter and taken out the following spring). After taking it out, rinse it in long river water for 49 days, then lift it out and expose it to sun and dew for 7 days to obtain the final product.

    "Explanation of Names": Fill the bamboo tube with Liquorice Root powder, seal both ends with bamboo or wood, and immerse it in a human manure vat during winter. Take it out at the Beginning of Spring (1st solar term), hang it in a windy place to dry in the shade, then break the bamboo to retrieve the Liquorice Root powder, and dry it in the sun.
