bubble_chart Formula Principles
The syndrome treated by this formula is mostly caused by sweating in the wind or prolonged residence in damp and low-lying areas, where wind-dampness pathogens attach to the surface of the body. The wind pathogens struggle and stagnate in the taiyang meridians, resulting in symptoms such as headache, heavy body, or pain in the lower back and spine, making it difficult to turn. Since the pathogens are on the surface, they should be expelled from the surface, allowing the wind-dampness to be removed through sweating. Therefore, the treatment focuses on dispelling wind and dampness. In this formula, Notopterygium and Pubescent Angelica serve as the monarch herbs. Notopterygium enters the taiyang meridians and can dispel wind-dampness in the upper body, while Pubescent Angelica is effective in dispelling wind-dampness in the lower body. Together, they disperse wind-dampness throughout the body, relax the joints, and relieve obstruction. Saposhnikovia Root and Chinese Lovage act as the minister herbs, dispelling wind-dampness from the taiyang meridians and alleviating headaches. Sichuan Lovage Rhizome is added to invigorate blood circulation and dispel wind to relieve pain, while Chastetree Fruit also dispels wind to relieve pain. Liquorice Root serves as the envoy herb, harmonizing the effects of the other herbs. Combined, the formula achieves the function of expelling wind and eliminating dampness. After taking the formula, mild sweating should occur, allowing the wind-dampness to be completely expelled, and the pain will cease.

Recent clinical reports have shown that the modified Notopterygium Overcoming Dampness Decoction is quite effective in treating allergic purpura. For example, in 8 male and 6 female patients, mostly children and young adults with allergic purpura, the disease course ranged from 3 days to 1.5 months. Their symptoms and signs all met the diagnostic criteria for allergic purpura. Among the 14 cases, 5 were of the simple type, 3 were of the joint type, 4 were of the abdominal type, and 2 were complicated by nephritis. Treatment method: Only Chinese medicinals were taken, with the basic composition being Notopterygium Overcoming Dampness Decoction plus Astragalus Root and Schizonepeta. One dose was decocted with water daily and taken in the morning and evening. The basic formula was used for the simple type, the basic formula plus Asarum and Cinnamon Twig for the joint type, and the basic formula plus Pinellia and Peony Root for the abdominal type; for those complicated by nephritis, treatment was based on the pattern type of allergic purpura without additional modifications; regardless of the type, Cicada Slough could be added if there were signs of heat. All 14 cases were cured. That is, the purpura completely disappeared, along with the accompanying symptoms of expelling pathogen from exterior, abdominal pain, vomiting, black stools, or joint swelling and pain, or rubella, which also completely disappeared. The nephritis-related edema disappeared, blood pressure returned to normal, and proteinuria, hematuria, and cylindruria all turned negative. All cases showed significant improvement in purpura after taking 3 doses of the medication, with 3 cases cured after 3 doses, most cured after 6-9 doses, and a maximum of 12 doses.
