"Yang" (陽) refers to the lateral side, and the point is located on the lateral aspect of lower leg.
"Ling" (陵) means hill or mound, referring to the prominence of head of fibula.
"Quan" (泉) means spring or fountain, as the point is located in the depression below fibular head, resembling a spring.
It is also abbreviated as "Yangling" (陽陵) (Biaoyou Fu).

The point is located on the lateral aspect of lower leg, in the depression anterior and inferior to the head of fibula. It is commonly described as being 2 cun below knee.
- Lingshu-Benshu: "In the depression on the lateral side of knee";
- Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing: "1 cun below knee, in the depression on the lateral side of lower leg";
- Zhenjiu Wendui: "2 cun below knee";
- Beiji Qianjin Yaofang: "on the lateral side below knee, in the depression anterior to the prominent bone";
- Donggong Anmo Mijue: "below the high bone on the lateral side of knee, about one finger's width." Modern standard: 2 cun below knee.
