bubble_chart Etymology

"Xiao" (小) refers to small intestine meridian; "hai" (海), sea, refers to the gathering place of meridian qi. The acupoint is He-sea point of hand taiyang small intestine meridian, where the qi is deep and vast like water flowing into sea, hence the name.

On the medial side of elbow, in the depression between olecranon of ulna and medial epicondyle of humerus. Located in ulnar nerve groove behind medial epicondyle of humerus, approximately 0.5 cun lateral to the tip of elbow (olecranon).
  • Lingshu-Benshu: "On the outer side of the large bone inside elbow, half a cun away from the end in the depression";
  • Xunjing Kaoxue Bian: "0.5 cun lateral to Tianjing (TE10)";
  • Leijing Zhang Jie-bin note: "In the depression between the two bones below the tip of elbow, pressing on the tendon will elicit a sore and numb sensation in finger".

  • Muscle: origin of flexor carpi ulnaris.
  • Nerve: branches of medial brachial cutaneous nerve, ulnar nerve.
  • Vessels: ulnar recurrent artery and vein, superior and inferior ulnar accessory artery and vein.

Oblique insertion forward and downward 0.5~1 cun. Moxibustion with moxa stick for 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Classical: depressive psychosis, fever and chills without sweating, malaria, aversion to cold, tooth decay and pain, wind-induced dizziness, headache, dizziness, neck pain radiating to elbow and armpit, cheek swelling, pain in jaw, neck, shoulder, upper arm, elbow, and outer posterior side of arm, deafness, yellowing of eyes, inability to lift limbs, lower back pain radiating to lower abdomen, irritability, chills along the spine, and mania.
