"Shao" (少) means small; "shang" (商) is one of the five musical notes (Gong, Shang, Jiao, Zheng, Yu), corresponding to metal, the same as the lung. The acupoint belongs to hand taiyin lung meridian (LU) and is located at the end of the limb, where the pulse energy is fine, hence the name.

- Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing added: "The distance from nail is like chive leave" ;
- Waitai Miyao: "Located on the outer edge of the thumbnail, at the junction of the white flesh, about the width of a chive leaf, in a slightly recessed area."
- Zhenjiu Jicheng: "The nail corner is about three fen away from the flesh and aligns with the head of the first transverse crease." That is, the depression located 1 fen behind and beside the radial corner of the thumbnail.
