"Yu" (魚) refers to the fish belly, indicating the eminence formed by the thenar muscle group; "Ji" (際) means the edge. The acupoint is located at the edge of the raised white flesh (thenar eminence) behind the palm, hence the name.Huangdi Neijing MingtangYang Shang-shan note: "The base of the thumb, after the first joint, resembles the shape of a fish, hence it is named "Yu" (fish). It lies at the junction of the red and white flesh, thus called "Yuji" (fish border)."

The acupoint is located in the depression behind the base of the thumb (the first metacarpophalangeal joint), at the midpoint of the first metacarpal bone on the radial side, at the junction of the red and white flesh.
