This product is the dried whole herb with fruit spikes of the Lamiaceae plant Basil Herb (Ocimum basilicum Linn.). The entire plant is harvested during summer and autumn when fruit spikes form, cleaned of soil, dried in the sun, and tied into small bundles.

Hairy Basil Herb (Ocimum basilicum var. pilosum (Willd.) Benth.) and Large Basil Herb (Ocimum basilicum var. majus Benth.) are both cultivated varieties of Basil Herb, artificially cultivated in most regions of Taiwan as aromatic plants.

Acrid, warm. Act on lung, spleen, large intestine and stomach meridians.

Dispersing wind and releasing the external, dispelling wind to reduce swelling, resolving stasis to stop pain, invigorating the blood to unblock meridians.

For exogenous headache, food stagnation and qi stagnation, epigastric pain, traumatic injuries, snake and insect bites, eczema and itching.

The usual dosage is 5-10 grams; for external use, an appropriate amount is decocted into a concentrated solution for fumigation and washing of the affected area, or fresh herb is mashed to extract juice for external application.
