The coffee bean is native to the tropical regions of Africa and is now also cultivated in provinces such as Guangdong and Yunnan in China. The seeds, known as "coffee beans," can be roasted, ground into powder, and used as a beverage, commonly referred to as coffee.

bubble_chart Morphological Characteristics

The coffee bean tree is an evergreen tree belonging to the India Madder Root family, and the coffee bean is recognized as the most unique alkaloid beverage plant. Generally, within two to three years after sowing, the coffee bean tree can grow to a height of about five to ten meters. However, to prevent the coffee beans from losing their aroma, deteriorating in taste, and to facilitate harvesting, farmers often prune them to about one and a half to two meters. The trees begin to bear fruit three to five years after sowing. The harvesting period spans twenty years starting from the fifth year. Among the more practical cultivated varieties are three original species: highland cultivation, lowland cultivation, and minimum cultivation.

The annular zone near the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn is referred to as the Coffee Zone or Coffee Belt. This area is ideal for coffee bean production due to its rich organic matter, volcanic ash soil, average temperature around 20 degrees Celsius, average annual rainfall between 1000 to 2000 mm, and minimal temperature fluctuations throughout the year. Cultivating coffee beans requires strict protection against cold, dry hot winds, and frost damage.

The flavor of the beans varies depending on the region of growth. Factors influencing the taste include the variety of the coffee bean tree, the nature of the soil, the climate and altitude of the plantation, the care taken in harvesting, and the processing of the bean uterus. These factors vary by region, and roasters and blenders seek out the unique characteristics of each area to create blends with distinctive typical flavors.

bubble_chart Cautions and Contraindications

  1. The coffee beans contained in coffee beans have a stimulating effect on the central nervous system, which can exacerbate the condition of insomnia patients, so they should not be consumed.
  2. Children's zang-fu organs are delicate and not yet fully developed. Regular consumption of coffee beans can affect the development of the children's nervous system, and may even lead to symptoms of nervous system disorder, so it should be avoided.
  3. Coffee beans are also detrimental to the development of the fetus, potentially leading to reduced muscle tone, poor limb mobility, and even mental retardation or dementia. According to a study by scholars in Montreal, Canada, involving 331 women who experienced late abortion, drinking coffee during pregnancy increases the risk of late abortion, especially in the early stages of pregnancy, making it particularly inadvisable to consume coffee beans.
  4. Research has shown that coffee beans can increase cholesterol levels, leading to an increase in low-density lipoprotein associated with stirred pulse, so they should be avoided by patients with coronary heart disease.
  5. Coffee beans stimulate both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, and after consumption, they can increase digestive fluids such as stomach acid, thereby worsening the condition of patients with digestive ulcers, so they should not be consumed.
  6. After taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as furazolidone and isoniazid, if coffee is consumed again, it is easy to experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and arrhythmia, so it is also not advisable to take medicine and coffee beans at the same time.
