This product is the dried whole herb of Incarvilla compacta (Incarvilla compacta Maxim.), a plant of the Chinese trumpetcreeper family. It is collected during the peak flowering period, washed to remove soil, dried, impurities removed, and cut into segments.

This product has a cylindrical root, often with remnants of stems and leaves at the upper end. It is brittle in texture, with a fracture surface that is off-white to pale yellow, the cortex being darker in color, loose, granular, and with a distinct pith. The leaves are wrinkled, with intact leaves being oblong and pinnately divided, with lobes of varying sizes, dark green to pale yellow. The flowers are wrinkled, pale purple or dark brown; when moistened and expanded, they take on a funnel shape, with 5 shallow lobes at the apex, 4 stamens, and a funnel-shaped stigma. Capsules are occasionally seen, with 4 ridges. The odor is faint, and the taste is mild.
