They mostly grow on hillsides and in shrublands. Bigleaf beautyberry leaf: An evergreen shrub or small tree, the entire plant is covered with grayish-white, mealy, long hairs; simple leaves are opposite, oblong, 15~25 cm long, with serrated edges; in summer, axillary cymes produce purple corollas; the fruit is round, about the size of a mung bean, turning purple-red like a bead when ripe, hence the name "Taiwan beautyberry leaf". Nakedflower beautyberry leaf: Similar in form to bigleaf beautyberry leaf, but its old stems are bare and have lenticels; its leaves are smaller, with fewer hairs, turning brown when dried, and the inflorescence stalks are shorter.
