This prescription is a key formula for treating damp phlegm. The formation of damp phlegm is often due to the consumption of raw and cold foods, leading to spleen-stomach disharmony and impaired transportation and transformation, resulting in the accumulation of dampness into phlegm. In the formula, Pinellia dries dampness and resolves phlegm, downbears counterflow to stop vomiting; red tangerine exocarp regulates qi and resolves phlegm, ensuring that when qi flows smoothly, phlegm descends, and when qi moves, phlegm transforms. Since phlegm arises from dampness, Poria is used to invigorate the spleen and drain dampness; Licorice Root harmonizes the middle and benefits the spleen. Fresh Ginger Rhizome is added during decoction to counteract the toxicity of Pinellia and synergize with Pinellia and red tangerine exocarp to harmonize the stomach, dispel phlegm, and stop vomiting. A small amount of Smoked Plum, with its sour and astringent properties, is combined with Pinellia to relieve the exterior with astringents, preventing excessive dispersion. This formula can be modified to treat any condition caused by phlegm-dampness.
