bubble_chart Formula Principles
The syndrome treated by this formula pertains to dual deficiency of qi and blood. In the formula, Ginseng and Astragalus Root tonify qi; Chinese Angelica Root, Prepared Rehmannia Root, and Sichuan Lovage Rhizome tonify blood and enrich yin. Combined into a formula, it has the function of tonifying and replenishing qi and blood. When qi is vigorous, blood naturally generates; when blood is vigorous, qi has something to attach to. Yu Jia-yan discussed this formula, stating: "In cases of excessive blood loss, long-standing sores with pus that do not cease, although it is said to be yin deficiency, there is actually none that does not also involve yang deficiency. The combined use of Ginseng and Astragalus Root is indeed an excellent method. Generally, yin deficiency pattern should mostly follow this approach." Clinically, it is commonly used for excessive bleeding, blood deficiency accompanied by qi deficiency, characterized by symptoms such as vexing heat, thirst, restless sleep, palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue and weakness, pale tongue texture, thin and moist tongue coating, and fine and soft pulse as key diagnostic points. The Sage Cure Decoction recorded in Yizong Jinjian·Revised Mingyi Fanglun, which is the Four Ingredients Decoction plus Ginseng and Astragalus Root, treats all cases of excessive blood loss, yin depletion with qi weakness, vexing heat and thirst, and restless sleep.
