bubble_chart Concept

Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that this disease falls under the categories of "asthma," "abdominal pain," "blood deficiency," "phlegm rash," and "worm pattern." The disease's etiology and pathogenesis are primarily due to congenital insufficiency and improper postnatal care, leading to a deficiency in nutrient-defense, invasion of the body by wind-cold and dampness-heat pathogens, which accumulate in the lungs causing cough and asthma, and manifest on the skin as phlegm rash and cutaneous pruritus. Alternatively, excessive consumption of rich, fatty foods, fish, shrimp, crab, and other items that promote wind and dampness can lead to the accumulation of wind, dampness, and heat in the stomach and intestines, manifesting on the skin as urticaria. Prolonged illness can lead to spleen and kidney deficiency, resulting in symptoms of blood deficiency.

bubble_chart Modern Research

Eosinophilia refers to eosinophils accounting for more than 6% of the white blood cell differential count in adult peripheral blood, or an absolute value exceeding 440 per cubic millimeter. Its clinical manifestations are mostly determined by the primary disease. Common symptoms include cough, expectoration, asthma, chest tightness, fever, rash, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, dizziness, weight loss, or anemia.

The main disease causes of eosinophilia include: Chinese Taxillus Herb infestation, allergic diseases, skin diseases, pulmonary eosinophilia, hematological diseases, physical and chemical factors, certain pestilence diseases, malignant tumors, familial eosinophilia, and eosinophilic lymphogranuloma.

Eosinophilia caused by allergic reactions is due to the body's allergic reaction to foreign protein antigens, which causes sensitized tissue cells to release histamine and eosinophil chemotactic factors. Eosinophils, on one hand, neutralize histamine, and on the other hand, are attracted by eosinophil chemotactic factors, leading to an increase in peripheral blood eosinophils.

[Diagnosis]

  1. Symptoms: The onset is slow, with self-reported fatigue, weakness, anorexia, low-grade fever, and fear of cold. After one week, a cough begins, mostly paroxysmal, with little sputum that is difficult to expectorate, appearing as white sticky sputum. Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, similar to an asthma attack, often worsens at night. Some may experience abdominal pain and skin rashes.
  2. Signs: Lung qi swelling and diffuse bronchitis signs may be present, with possible cyanosis. During the fever period, a few patients may have hepatosplenomegaly or lymphadenopathy.
  3. Laboratory tests:
    1. Blood picture: Increased white blood cells, significantly elevated eosinophils (20%-80%), and accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate.
    2. Syphilis blood moistening and tonifying body binding reaction: 60% positive, cold agglutination test, mostly highly positive; heterophile agglutination test, 1/3 may be positive.
    3. Sputum examination: Increased eosinophils.
