1. Wind-cold Dampness Stagnation︰Slight pain in the nasal cavity, nasal congestion, clear nasal discharge, mild aversion to wind and cold, or fever, epigastric stuffiness, anorexia, abdominal distension and fullness, loose stool, thin tongue coating, or white and greasy, floating and rapid pulse, or soggy and rapid pulse. The pain is not severe, only accompanied by mild aversion to wind and cold, as well as anorexia, loose stool, soggy pulse, greasy tongue coating, and other signs of cold-dampness. Treatment should focus on dispelling wind, resolving dampness, and dispersing cold. The recommended formula is Patchouli Qi-Righting Powder with the addition of Pueraria Root.
2. Wind-heat Congesting the Lung︰The nasal cavity is hot, painful, red, and swollen, with turbid nasal discharge, accompanied by fever, headache, thirst, cough with yellow phlegm, and other symptoms. The tongue texture is red with a thin or slightly yellow coating, and the pulse is floating and rapid. With prominent heat signs, severe pain, and symptoms such as swelling and burning heat, the treatment should focus on {|###|}dispelling wind{|###|} and clearing heat. The prescription used is Lonicera and Forsythia Powder supplemented with Dahurian Angelica and Pueraria Root.
3. Lung-Stomach Heat Excess︰The nasal pain is severe, mostly located at the front of the nasal cavity and the septum, with significant tenderness upon pressure, and may be accompanied by slight bleeding. Symptoms such as thirst, dry throat, constipation, and dark yellow urine are also observed. The tongue coating is yellow, and the pulse is rapid. This condition is often caused by excessive alcohol consumption and indulgence in spicy, hot, or grilled foods, combined with exposure to pathogenic heat. The fiery heat pathogen disturbs the nasal cavity, leading to stagnation of the meridians and collaterals. It is characterized by symptoms such as constipation, dark yellow urine, and a rapid pulse due to intense heat in the stomach fu. The treatment should focus on draining the lung and clearing the stomach. The prescription involves modifications of Stomach-Clearing Powder combined with Stomach-Regulating Purgative Decoction. Once the fu qi is unblocked, the nasal pain will naturally subside, as the lung and the large intestine are interiorly-exteriorly related.
