This product is the cork-winged branches or cork wings of the plant Winged Euonymus (Euonymus alatus (Thunb.) Sieb.) from the Winged Euonymus family. Winged Euonymus is a deciduous shrub, 1-3 meters tall, entirely glabrous, with green twigs and gray-brown old branches, bearing 2-4 longitudinal corky wings, up to 1 cm wide, brown, rarely wingless. Leaves are simple and opposite, obovate to obovate-elliptic or broadly lanceolate, 3-7 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, apex acuminate or shortly acute, base cuneate, margins finely and sharply serrate, glabrous on both sides, petiole 1-2 mm long or sessile. Cymes are axillary, usually with 3 flowers, peduncles slender, 5-20 mm long; flowers small, bisexual, sepals 4, semicircular; petals 4, yellow-green, obovate, about 3.5 mm long, margins sometimes slightly wavy; stamens 4, filaments not exceeding the anthers, attached to the edge of the disk; disk thick, shallowly 4-lobed; ovary fused with the disk, 4-celled, style short. Capsules are purplish, smooth, deeply lobed, usually 1-3 carpels developed; seeds brown, elliptic, covered with orange-red aril. Flowering period is May-June; fruiting period is September-October.

The dried twigs are slender and cylindrical, 40-50 cm long, 0.4-1 cm in diameter, surface gray-green, with longitudinal wrinkles, bearing gray-brown corky wings on all sides, resembling arrow feathers, branches hard and tough, fracture pale yellow-white, fibrous; corky wings are flat, elongated, thin, usually about 4 cm long, 0.4-1 cm wide, about 2 mm thick, surface gray-brown, with fine, dense, straight or slightly wavy longitudinal lines. Light and brittle, easily broken, fracture relatively smooth, brown-red. Odor slight, taste slightly bitter and astringent. The best quality is characterized by dry, uniform twigs with complete corky wings.
