This product is the vine stem of the leguminous climbing shrub Spatholobus suberectus (Spatholobus suberectus Dunn). It is mainly produced in Guangxi. It is harvested in autumn and winter, with the branches and leaves removed, sliced, and dried.

Plants of the same family, such as Millettia dielsiana (Millettia dielsiana Harms), are also used as suberect spatholobus stem, with similar medicinal properties and efficacy.

This product is elliptical, oblong, or irregularly oblique slices, 0.3-1 cm thick. The cork is gray-brown, some with gray-white spots, and the exposed area after cork shedding appears red-brown. The cut surface shows a red-brown or brown wood part with numerous vessel pores; the phloem contains resinous secretions ranging from red-brown to black-brown, arranged alternately with the wood part in 3-8 eccentric semicircular rings; the pith is biased to one side. The texture is hard. The odor is slight, and the taste is astringent.
