This product is the dried whole herb of the European Verbena Herb (Verbena officinalis Linn.) from the European Verbena Herb family. It grows on hillsides, roadsides, and wastelands near villages. It is widely distributed in most provinces of mainland China and is found in tropical and temperate regions worldwide. It is a perennial herb, and the whole plant is harvested when the flowers are in full bloom from June to August. After removing impurities, it is dried in the sun.

In southern China, plants from the Orchidaceae family, specifically the Dendrobium genus (Dendrobium chrysanthum Wall.), are often referred to as European Verbena Herb, while this species is called "Iron Horse Whip." Care should be taken to distinguish between them.
