bubble_chart Overview

The cysticerci of Taenia solium enter the retina via the choroid membrane blood vessels and then migrate into the vitreous, forming vitreous cysticercosis (Cysticercus cellulosae), which is relatively common. The pathogenesis involves the ingestion of pork containing viable Taenia eggs. The eggshells are digested by duodenal fluid, allowing the oncospheres to penetrate the intestinal wall, enter the bloodstream, disseminate throughout the body, and lodge in tissues to form cysticerci. The cysticerci of Taenia solium can occur in any part of the eye, with the vitreous being the most frequent site.

bubble_chart Clinical Manifestations

1. Symptoms: In the early stage, patients may experience oval-shaped dark shadows floating in front of their eyes, along with伸缩变形 and蠕动的阴霾. In the advanced stage, due to interference with intraocular tissues and the formation of inflammation, vision can significantly decline,甚至失明.

2. Fundus examination: Yellowish-white, translucent, round cysts can be observed in the vitreous body, measuring approximately 2–6 PD. Surrounding the cysts is a golden reflective ring, and within the cysts, a shiny white dot-like head may be visible. Under strong light exposure, the head may exhibit伸缩运动, and sometimes吸盘 can be seen during the伸缩 of the head.

Over time, due to vitreous opacity, the typical morphology of the cyst becomes difficult to observe. Concurrently, complications such as视网膜脱离 may arise. Occasionally, the cyst may钻入视网膜下而 Chinese Taxillus Herb.

bubble_chart Diagnosis

1. History of consuming pork infected with cysticerci.

2. Early stage: subjective perception of floating shadows in the visual field; late stage [third stage]: decreased vision.

3. Vitreous shows varying degrees of opacity, with translucent grayish or bluish spherical cysts visible in the vitreous. The center often has a grayish-white or yellowish-white circular spot, which is the head of the cysticercus. Occasionally, the cysticercus may be seen moving within the vitreous.

4. Positive results in intradermal test and complement fixation test.

bubble_chart Treatment Measures

Early surgical removal of cysticercus: Under a surgical microscope, the cysticercus and inflammatory material in the vitreous are aspirated through the pars plana or removed via vitrectomy, followed by retinal repair to eliminate severe reactions.
