bubble_chart Overview

Elongated uvula (elongated uvula) is caused by chronic inflammatory stimulation of the sinuses, nasopharynx, oropharynx, and tonsils, leading to inflammation of the uvula, degeneration of its muscle tissue, and downward extension of mucosal edema, resulting in thinning and elongation of the uvula. Additionally, developmental abnormalities are also one of the disease causes. A normal uvula does not come into contact with the tongue surface. If it touches the tongue surface and causes symptoms, it is referred to as elongated uvula.

bubble_chart Clinical Manifestations

The sensation of a foreign body in the throat is the most common symptom, which may disappear when opening the mouth wide and taking a deep breath but reappears when closing the mouth. Sometimes it can cause nausea and vomiting, especially after meals or during throat examinations. Some patients may experience coughing more easily when lying flat, along with changes in voice. Examination reveals a relaxed and elongated uvula, with its lower end touching the tongue surface and not separating even when the soft palate is raised. Sometimes the tip may be hypertrophic and spherical in shape.

bubble_chart Treatment Measures

It is advisable to treat chronic inflammation of the nasopharynx and pharynx, abstain from smoking, alcohol, and irritating foods, and maintain oral hygiene. For patients with significant symptoms, partial resection of the uvula may be performed, but excessive removal should be avoided to prevent affecting the function of the soft palate due to excessive shortening. Care should be taken to make the incision slope backward, and the mucosal edge should cover the stump when suturing.
