bubble_chart Overview Postpartum low or complete absence of milk is called agalactia. The secretion of milk is related to the mother's mental state, emotions, nutritional status, rest, and labor. Any psychological stimuli such as worry, fear, distress, or sadness can reduce milk secretion.
bubble_chart Diagnosis
Postpartum little or no milk production.
bubble_chart Treatment Measures
Since mental factors are a primary cause of agalactia, maintaining a cheerful mood and avoiding emotional stress are key aspects of correcting agalactia. In terms of diet, it is advisable to consume easily digestible, nutrient-rich, and calcium-rich foods such as fish, liver, bone broth, cow's milk, and goat's milk. If the constitution is weak and the spirit is fatigued, Chinese patent drugs can be taken according to the following pattern identification for treatment:
(1) **Qi and blood deficiency type**: Postpartum lactation is scant or even absent, with thin and clear milk, soft breasts that are neither swollen nor painful, pale complexion, mental fatigue, poor appetite, and a pale tongue with little coating. Treatment should focus on tonifying and replenishing qi and blood to promote lactation. Recommended medications:
- **Promoting Lactation Pill**: Take 1 pill each time, twice daily.
- **Lactation-Infusion Granule**: Take 1 sachet each time, three times daily, with warm water.
(2) **Liver depression and qi stagnation type**: Postpartum lactation is scant or even absent, accompanied by chest and rib-side distension, depression, mild fever, poor appetite, and a thin yellow tongue coating. Treatment should focus on soothing the liver and relieving depression to promote lactation. Recommended medications:
- **Promoting Lactation Yongxian Powder**: Take 6 grams each time, three times daily.
- **Shengruzhi (Raw Milk Decoction)**: Take 100 ml each time, twice daily, warmed before consumption.
**Precautions**:
-
- Breastfeed on schedule. For normal full-term infants, breastfeeding can begin 8–12 hours after birth. For premature infants, it may be delayed to 16–24 hours. Each feeding session should last 15–20 minutes.
-
- Avoid excessive fatigue before childbirth and refrain from overexertion too soon after delivery.
-
**Jinfu**
- Certain medications such as atropine, erythromycin, tetracycline, salicylates, iodides, bromides, sulfonamides, and phenobarbital should be avoided.
-
- Pay attention to nutritional intake in the diet. Avoid highly stimulating foods such as five-spice seasonings, fried foods, and pastries.
