bubble_chart Overview Threatened late abortion refers to a condition in the early stages of pregnancy characterized by slight vaginal bleeding that comes and goes, accompanied by mild lower abdominal pain and backache. It may lead to late abortion, but with appropriate treatment, the pregnancy can continue. The main causes include the mother's weak constitution, fatigue, or trauma (including improper vaginal examinations or sexual intercourse). This condition is equivalent to "vaginal bleeding during pregnancy" in Chinese medicine. If there is no vaginal bleeding but only soreness, distension, and a dragging pain in the lower back and abdomen, it is called "threatened abortion."
bubble_chart Diagnosis
A positive pregnancy test, accompanied by slight vaginal bleeding, or with symptoms such as lower back pain, abdominal distension, fullness, and bearing-down pain, can diagnose this condition. It mostly occurs within the first 4 months of pregnancy. If the pregnancy test changes from positive to negative, it indicates a late abortion.
bubble_chart Prevention
Patients with this condition are strictly prohibited from sexual intercourse, especially those within the first three months of pregnancy. They should avoid heavy physical labor and strenuous exercise, prevent fatigue, and ensure adequate sleep. When vaginal bleeding is minimal, walking is permitted. Cold, raw, and greasy foods are forbidden; instead, a nutritious and easily digestible diet is recommended. Medications and foods that may cause late abortion should be avoided as much as possible, such as Cassia Bark, Dried Ginger, Peach Kernel, Cluster Mallow Fruit, Alisma, and blood-activating herbs like Hawthorn Fruit, Coix Seed, rabbit meat, crab, and Water Chestnut. If vaginal bleeding is heavy, seek medical treatment immediately. Patients with overdue late abortion should undergo a clearing pericardium procedure to reduce bleeding.
