bubble_chart Formula Principles

This formula is also known as the Lung-Draining Powder, suitable for the syndrome of panting and coughing due to latent fire stagnation and heat in the lungs. The disease of this formula is located in the lungs, characterized by latent fire stagnation and heat. During the course of the disease, the lung yin has been damaged by heat, hence the treatment should focus on clearing lung heat with sweet and cold properties. In the formula, White Mulberry Root-Bark is used to drain lung heat, lower lung qi, and relieve coughing and panting, serving as the sovereign medicinal. Chinese Wolfberry Root-bark is used as the minister medicinal to clear lung heat and relieve steaming bone fever and muscle heat. The sovereign and minister medicinals work together to drain the latent fire in the lungs and relieve coughing and panting. Rice and roasted Liquorice Root are used as adjuvant medicinals to nourish the stomach and harmonize the middle, thereby supporting lung qi. Roasted Liquorice Root also serves to harmonize the various medicinals and acts as the guiding medicinal. The characteristic of this formula is that it neither clears and disperses the substantial heat in the lungs to treat the symptoms, nor nourishes yin and moistens the lungs to treat the root cause. Instead, it clears and drains the latent fire in the lungs to eliminate stagnant heat, providing a dual approach to both symptoms and root cause, particularly beneficial for children with a "tender yin" constitution.
