bubble_chart Formula Principles
This formula was originally designed to treat blood stasis in the chest, obstructed qi movement, resulting in symptoms such as chest pain, restlessness, etc. Static blood obstructing the chest leads to chest pain, restlessness, palpitations, and insomnia; stasis obstructing the clear yang from rising causes headaches (without exterior pathogens, internal syndromes, qi deficiency, or phlegm-fluid retention); stomach stasis-heat surging upward, or blood stasis obstructing the esophagus or epiglottis results in hiccups, retching, or hiccups upon drinking water; qi depression causing irritability and frequent anger, with signs of stasis visible on the face, lips, tongue, and pulse.
Previous scholars believed this condition was caused by blood stasis and qi depression, with yang qi unable to disperse. Therefore, this formula adopts the method of raising yang to relieve depression, invigorating blood, and resolving stasis to open the chest and relieve pain. The entire formula combines Peach Kernel, Carthamus and Four-Ingredient Decoction with Cold-Limbs Powder (replacing Immature Orange Fruit with Submature Bitter Orange ), and adds Platycodon Root and Achyranthes Root . Peach Kernel, Carthamus and Four-Ingredient Decoction invigorates blood and resolves stasis; Cold-Limbs Powder soothes the liver and relieves depression; adding Platycodon Root to open the qi of the chest and diaphragm, used together with Submature Bitter Orange and Bupleurum , is particularly effective in opening the chest and dispersing stagnation; Achyranthes Root guides static blood downward, with one ascending and one descending, facilitating the smoother movement of qi and blood. This formula not only addresses stasis in the blood aspect but also resolves depression in the qi aspect, invigorating blood without depleting it, and removing stasis while generating new blood. Combined into a formula, it is not only suitable for the aforementioned conditions caused by blood stasis but can also serve as a general treatment for all cases of qi stagnation and blood stasis.
