In the spring of the Wuchen year of the Hongwu era, many villagers suffered from pharyngitis, which was caused by the pathogenic fire from the end of the previous year. I frequently used Licorice and Platycodon Decoction, adding Coptis Rhizome, Pinellia, Stiff Silkworm, and burdock to expel the pathogen from the exterior. For those with deficiency, I added ginseng, angelica, and peony. For those unable to swallow, I first used Realgar detoxifying pills, grinding them with vinegar and administering them orally. After the phlegm was expelled from the throat, I used ginger juice, followed by the aforementioned medicine, which was always remarkably effective. However, if chalcanthite or other cold and sour substances were applied, the condition became incurable, as the pathogen remained trapped and unable to be expelled.
