I then administered a dose of Minor Purgative Decoction, and indeed, the bowels moved, the symptoms gradually improved, and the pulse also gradually became wiry. After half a month of treatment, she recovered. Someone asked, "Sir, with slight purgation and a wiry pulse, you determined that she could be treated. How did you arrive at this conclusion?" I replied, "Didn't Zhang Zhongjing say, 'Floccillation, restlessness, slight panting, staring straight ahead, with a wiry pulse indicates life, while a choppy pulse indicates death'? For slight cases, with fever and delirious speech, Major Purgative Decoction is the main treatment. According to Qian Zhongyang's 'Xiao'er Yaozheng Zhijue,' grasping at the collar and twisting objects indicates liver heat. Zhang Zhongjing classified this under yangming disease, as yangming pertains to the stomach. When the liver has pathogenic heat, it invades the stomach meridian. I used Chengqi Decoction for purgation, but since she had already been purged, I used Minor Purgative Decoction for slight purgation. Indeed, after purgation, the pulse turned wiry, indicating that the liver was pacified and the stomach was not being oppressed, hence I judged that she could be treated."
