The modifications of this formula can also be applied to acute Rebing late stage [third stage] heart yin injury, such as Ye Tian-shi and Wu Ju-tong's pulse-restoring method (i.e., this formula minus ginseng, cinnamon, and ginger, plus three shells); it can also be used for yin deficiency type deficiency fatigue. For arrhythmias caused by various reasons presenting with yin deficiency or deficiency of both qi and yin, the original formula by Zhongjing has excellent efficacy. It can tonify qi, enrich yin, nourish blood to restore pulsation, and is also applicable for atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, rheumatic heart disease presenting with arrhythmia accompanied by palpitations, shortness of breath, and a thin, weak, or intermittent pulse. It can also be used for profuse sweating of the palms (the palms are governed by the pericardium, which is the external protector of the heart and is discussed alongside the heart; sweat is the fluid of the heart, and profuse sweating indicates insufficiency of heart yin, hence it is appropriate to tonify qi and astringe yin to stop sweating) and tongue fissures (the tongue is the sprout of the heart; insufficient yin and blood lead to fissures on the tongue), with good results. In the formula, ginseng should not be decocted but rather ground into powder and taken orally; a large amount is not necessary, generally 1.5 to 3g each time is sufficient.
