title | Yu Jiayan's Medical Case Records |
Yuan Judong, aged twenty, had a mass of stuffiness in his abdomen and had been bedridden for several months. He had tried every possible treatment and taken various medicines to dissolve and reduce the mass, but his condition worsened to the point where his hair became brittle, his flesh wasted away, his face turned dark, and his hair curled. He was on the verge of death. He planned to travel by boat to seek medical treatment in the city, but fearing he might not survive the journey, he decided against it. However, he continued to spend heavily on both medical and spiritual treatments. By the time I arrived, his family's finances were exhausted. They merely asked for a diagnosis to determine how long he had left to live, with no other expectations.
During my examination, I first observed the "mass," which extended from the lower abdomen to the side of the navel, dividing into three branches, as hard as stone. Touching it caused unbearable pain. His pulse was strong and full at the two chi positions, but faint and thin elsewhere. I said: "This illness arose from treating the 'mass' as the disease itself, without investigating its root cause, leading to mistaken treatment. Initially, the mass was likely not so hard, but aggressive medicines were used to attack it, causing the vital qi to become disordered and aligning with pathogenic qi to cause harm. It's like a person being beaten or twisted into a knot, with no way to unravel it, hence the tightness and refusal to release. In reality, it was originally formed from air, not like the Xuehai (SP10) area in women where menstruation stagnates and forms blood clots. Observing the strong pulse at the chi position, it is clearly shaoyin kidney meridian qi transmitting to the bladder. The bladder's qi should naturally descend and exit through the two yin orifices, but mistakenly using blood-stasis-breaking medicines also damaged the qi, preventing it from moving and thus forming a stone-like mass. Touching it causes more pain, revealing its nature. If it were a blood clot, why would touching it cause pain? This illness could be cured with one dose of Bingben, but months of incorrect treatment have injured even the healthy areas from top to bottom. Let's first use a dose of tonifying Chinese medicinals to regulate the middle and purge the qi. Then, use a large dose to internally gather kidney qi and externally disperse bladder qi to resolve the entanglement. Approximately three doses should suffice for a full recovery.
