A young child, aged 5, suffered from pneumonia and was seen on the 8th day after the onset of the illness. According to the family, a renowned Western doctor diagnosed it as acute pneumonia. At that time, penicillin was highly popular and was administered every four hours continuously for several days and nights. The fever had subsided, and breathing had calmed down. However, the child soon became listless, refusing to eat or drink, not crying, fussing, or sleeping. The rectal temperature was 36.7°C, the pulse was deep, wiry, and slippery, the tongue coating was thick and white, and there were occasional episodes of nausea and retching. Although the child did not pass stool, there was no resistance upon abdominal palpation. However, when pressing on the chest and epigastric region, the child's face showed signs of distress. Yushu Dan was administered immediately, but the child vomited it all out, and the condition remained unchanged, leaving no solution. It was summer, and the child lay naked on the bed, allowing for examination. Observing the breathing, there were occasional deep sighs, and a sense of oppression in the chest and stomach region. Percussion of the stomach area revealed dullness. Therefore, it was treated as thoracic accumulation, with small doses of Platycodon Root White Powder (0.3g each time) administered frequently. If vomited, it was administered again, taking advantage of the vomiting to expel phlegm. After the medication, a large amount of sticky phlegm was indeed vomited, followed by the passage of sticky mucus in the stool. The child then began to cry and fuss. The next day, during the follow-up visit, the temperature had risen to 38.5°C, and there was coughing. The condition was then treated with Minor Green-Blue Dragon Decoction with modifications, leading to recovery.
