Qiu, suffering from fever, headache, palpitations, and irritability, with a floating, tight, and weak pulse, and a slow and weak pulse at the chi position, was diagnosed by local doctors as requiring Ephedra Decoction. I said, Zhongjing stated: "A slow pulse at the chi position indicates insufficient nutrient aspect, and one should not induce sweating." Therefore, I changed the prescription to Minor Center-Fortifying Decoction to first regulate the nutrient aspect. After five days, the chi position responded, and only then did I administer two doses of Ephedra Decoction. After taking the medicine, the patient became delirious and urgently summoned me, thinking that the previous treatment was correct but the latter was wrong. When I arrived, the patient had already calmed down, was peacefully asleep, and had already perspired. Indeed! Physicians should observe the exterior and interior deficiency and excess, wait for the appropriate time, and follow the proper sequence. If any step is inappropriate, even if temporary efficacy is achieved, it will harm the five zang-organs and shorten lifespan, causing great damage to yin. I record this to show He'an, fearing that He'an may not yet be able to deeply study and comprehend the "Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases."
