Na Mou, male, 14 years old, first consultation on August 23, 1977. The patient developed a fever five days after catching a cold. Despite using antibiotics, antipyretics, and over-the-counter medicines such as Yinqiao and Sangju, which release the exterior with pungent-cool properties, the fever did not subside. Instead, the body temperature continued to rise to 40.0°C, accompanied by chills and fever, mostly starting with aversion to cold followed by fever. Sweating did not reduce the fever, and there was slight throat pain. The tongue tip was slightly red, with a thin white coating, and the pulse was wiry and rapid. The throat was slightly red, and the tonsils were swollen to degree I. At that time, influenza was prevalent. Although the illness had lasted for five days, the Bupleurum syndrome was still present, and it was appropriate to harmonize it using Minor Bupleurum Decoction:
Bupleurum 15g, Skullcap Root 10g, Pinellia 10g, Tangshen 10g, Fresh Ginger Rhizome 10g, Raw Liquorice Root 9g, Chinese Date 4 pieces (pitted)
. After taking one dose, the fever subsided. After taking three doses in total, the fever did not recur. Observing that the tongue coating was slightly greasy and the pulse was moderate, Cyperus, Amomum and Six Gentlemen Decoction with Sanxian was prescribed for two doses to consolidate the recovery.
