Lin, male, 31 years old, diagnosed in September 1972. The patient was confirmed by gastroscopy to have gastric and duodenal ulcers for over a year. Despite taking various Western medicines, there was no improvement. He had also taken Aconite Middle-Regulating Decoction and several pills, but to no avail. His main symptoms were a particular fear of cold in the Zhongwan (CV12) area, with not very significant pain. He used three specially made towel pads stacked and tied around his epigastrium, and had to tightly wrap himself in a cotton-padded jacket to feel slightly warm. His appetite was poor, his spirit was low, and he was unable to work. He had loose stools, a thin and slippery tongue coating, and a wiry and slow pulse. The syndrome was attributed to insufficient spleen yang and cold retention in the middle, and the treatment should focus on warming yang and dispelling fluid retention, primarily using Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Bighead Atractylodes and Licorice Decoction.
Poria 30g, Cassia Bark 9g, charred White Atractylodes Rhizome 12g, Prepared Liquorice Root 9g
After 3 doses, the fear of cold in the Zhongwan (CV12) area significantly reduced, one cotton pad was removed, appetite slightly increased, and spirit improved. The original prescription was continued for another 4 doses.
At the next consultation, the cotton pads were completely removed, but sometimes he still needed to wrap himself tightly in a cotton-padded jacket. His appetite and spirit were returning to normal. Although the wiry pulse was gone, there was a sign of weakness. He was advised to continue taking the medicine and rest for a few more days, and the prescription was changed to Six Gentlemen Decoction with additions:

Astragalus Root 12g, Tangshen 12g, charred White Atractylodes Rhizome 9g, Poria 18g, Cassia Bark 4.5g, Pro Formula Pinellia 9g, Prepared Liquorice Root 6g
After taking the above prescription for 7 doses, the symptoms were completely eliminated. The original prescription was taken for another 3 doses, and he returned to work. A follow-up after 3 months showed no recurrence of the disease. Unfortunately, a barium meal review was not conducted, so the status of the ulcer lesion is unknown.
