Liu, male, 28 years old, farmer. Usually has irregular diet, leading to abdominal distension and fullness, anorexia, bloating after eating, mental fatigue and lack of strength. Previous doctors have used Rhubarb Rhizoma and digestive agents, after taking which resulted in watery diarrhea and worsened abdominal distension and fullness. Observation shows a pale tongue with thin white and slightly greasy coating, and a weak and feeble pulse. The syndrome is attributed to damaged middle yang, spleen deficiency and qi stagnation. Treatment involves warming yang, strengthening the spleen, moving qi, and relieving fullness. The prescription is Magnolia Bark, Fresh Ginger, Pinellia, Liquorice and Ginseng Decoction with added Dried Ginger and fried Hyacinth Bean:
Tangshen 12g, Magnolia Bark 9g, Dried Ginger 6g, Pinellia 9g, fried Hyacinth Bean 15g, Prepared Liquorice Root 6g, Fresh Ginger Rhizome 3 large slices
Second visit: After taking 3 doses, diarrhea stopped and bloating reduced. Remove fried Hyacinth Bean, add Villous Amomum Fruit 3g, decocted with water. 6 doses resulted in recovery.
