Cinnamon Twig and Liquorice Root both can restore heart yang and treat palpitations, as described in the "Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases." The treatise states, "Excessive sweating causes the person to clasp their chest with their hands, experience palpitations, and desire pressure; Cinnamon Twig and Liquorice Decoction is the remedy." Excessive sweating leads to deficiency of heart yang and severe palpitations, and these two herbs are used to restore it, with profound implications. Yin is the foundation, and yin cannot transform without yang. Cinnamon Twig harmonizes the nutritive qi and unblocks yang, while Liquorice Root nourishes the nutritive qi, tonifies yin, and promotes meridian flow. When used together, they balance rigidity and softness, gradually restoring heart yang, and are also effective for bradycardia. Bradycardia is generally caused by insufficiency of heart yang and obstruction of the heart vessels, often accompanied by palpitations, severe palpitations, chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, blurred vision, or even fainting, with a weak, thin, slow, or floating pulse. However, in clinical practice, this formula may not always be effective, and the key lies in the appropriate dosage of Cinnamon Twig. If one adheres strictly to conventional doses, the medicinal effect may be insufficient, leading to limited or no efficacy. Only with a large dose can the desired therapeutic effect be achieved.

In my treatment of bradycardia, I typically start with a dose of 10g of Cinnamon Twig, gradually increasing it, often up to 24g, and have used as much as 30g. The dose is maintained until the heart rate approaches normal or symptoms like dry mouth and tongue appear, at which point the dose is slightly reduced by 2-3g for continued use to consolidate the effect. Of course, if the syndrome does not align with the indications for Cinnamon Twig and Liquorice Decoction, this approach does not apply, and alternative treatments should be considered.
