Lin, a young male fisherman, was generally robust. One summer, after lunch, he dived into the sea to catch fish while his sweat was still wet. Upon returning home, he sweated profusely. From then on, regardless of winter or summer, day or night, he frequently experienced spontaneous sweating. He sought treatment at several places, where it was diagnosed as a case of weak defensive yang, and was treated with Jade Screen Powder, Long Mu, and Ephedra Root. Later, Cinnamon Twig Decoction with Astragalus Root was also used, which provided slight relief but the condition recurred. Subsequently, he went to a hospital where pulmonary tuberculosis was suspected, but X-ray examination showed normal heart and lungs.

After more than a year, his body became increasingly fatigued, his skin turned grayish-white from constant sweating, and his sweat pores enlarged, visible to the naked eye when sweating. He felt numbness in his limbs and dizziness, though his appetite remained normal. Although not bedridden, he was unable to participate in labor. His pulse was floating and slow, weak upon deep pressure. Despite heavy sweating, he did not feel thirsty and had reduced urine output. Sweating was more pronounced in the afternoon and evening, less in the morning, and slightly ceased before getting up in the early morning. Reflecting on the onset of his illness, it started during sweating when his pores were open, and he suddenly entered the water, allowing dampness to invade his muscles. The sweat pores suddenly closed, and the sweat could not be properly excreted, trapped between nutrient and defense layers, disrupting their harmony. Although the illness was long-standing, his visceral qi was not damaged, hence his pulse remained floating and slow. It was decided to mildly induce sweating to harmonize the nutrient and defense layers, using Cinnamon Twig Decoction:

Cinnamon Twig tips 9g, Hangzhou Peony Root 9g, Prepared Liquorice Root 3g, Chinese Date 7 pieces, Fresh Ginger Rhizome 9g
. One bowl of water was used to decoct to six-tenths, to be taken upon waking in the morning, followed by a bowl of hot porridge to aid the medicine's effect, and to rest for several hours avoiding wind. On the third day, during a follow-up visit, it was reported that after taking the medicine, the whole body felt warm, the limbs were comfortable, and the sweating had stopped. The original prescription was continued with the addition of Astragalus Root 15g, taken as before but without the hot porridge. After two doses, the condition was completely resolved. Subsequently, his body gradually became robust again, and there was no recurrence for 7 years.
