He was a renowned Chinese medicine clinician and educator in China, and the first president of the Shanghai Chinese Medicine College. In his early years, he studied under the famous Xin'an physician Wang Lianshi and later apprenticed with the renowned doctor Ding Ganren. He did not rigidly adhere to ancient practices but instead innovated and developed his own school and style.
