Ding Fu-bao (1874–1952), courtesy name Zhonghu and pseudonym Chouyin Jushi, was a native of Wuxi, Jiangsu. He graduated from the Nanjing Academy in Jiangyin and later devoted himself to the study of medicine under the guidance of Zhao Yuanyi, who was well-versed in both Chinese and Western medicine. As a result, Ding became proficient in both fields. In 1909, he passed the medical examination held by the Governor-General of Liangjiang with distinction, earning a certificate as a superior internal medicine practitioner. He was subsequently sent to Japan for further study. Upon returning to China, he established hospitals and sanatoriums in Shanghai and founded a medical publishing house to print medical books. In 1910, he launched the "Journal of Chinese and Western Medicine," dedicating himself to translating Japanese medical texts into Chinese and introducing Western medical knowledge to the Chinese medical community, making significant contributions to the dissemination of both Chinese and Western medicine. He translated and compiled over 160 medical books, covering various clinical disciplines and foundational theories. His "Ding's Medical Series" includes nearly 20 self-authored medical works. He also conducted in-depth research in philology and numismatics, compiling monumental works such as the "Shuowen Jiezi Gu Lin" (both original and supplementary volumes), the "Great Dictionary of Buddhism," and the "Great Dictionary of Ancient Coins."
